Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson (1907–1964), a biologist, conservationist, and writer, spawned the environmental movement with her 1962 book Silent Spring, which called public attention to the long-term damaging effects of chemical pesticides, including DDT. Her revelations ultimately led to a federal ban of DDT and the establishment of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Through other publications, such as The Sea Around Us, Carson raised awareness of natural ecosystems and human impact on the environment.
