Lucy Shapiro |
Lucy Shapiro (1940), a biologist and painter, brought an artist’s power of visualization to her study of biology. Shapiro’s research on the genetic mechanisms of a previously uncharacterized bacterium led to better understanding the full spatial workings of single cells. Her work sparked the new field of systems biology, with insights into stem cell function and the basis for biological diversity. Shapiro also codiscovered a new class of antimicrobial drugs. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.
