Carla J. Shatz
Carla J. Shatz (1947) is a neurobiologist who studies how the interplay between genes and environment shapes brain circuits. She seeks to understand how fetal neural activity transforms into adult brain circuitry during critical periods of development. Her research, focused on the development of the visual system, offers insights into how the nervous and immune systems interact, with implications for treating disorders such as autism, Alzheimer’s disease, and schizophrenia. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.
