Jody W. Deming
Jody W. Deming (1952) is an oceanographer whose research focuses on the bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms in subzero saltwater within polar sea ice. She also studies ancient marine sediments buried deep in permafrost. Her research interests include studies of cold-adapted microbes and their relation to astrobiology, biotechnology, and bioremediation. Deming and her laboratory have found that robust microbial ecosystems thrive under surprisingly extreme conditions due to numerous unique adaptations. She is known for her extensive field work, which includes more than 50 nautical research expeditions to the Arctic Ocean. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences
