Helen Rodriguez-Trias (1929–2001) advanced public health as a pediatrician, educator, and advocate. The first Hispanic woman to head the American Public Health Association, she cofounded both its Women’s Caucus and its Latino Caucus. She challenged health care discrimination and campaigned to protect abortion rights, prevent sterilization abuse, and improve neonatal care. Rodriguez-Trias taught in both Puerto Rico and New York, and was awarded the 2001 Presidential Citizen’s Medal for her efforts on behalf of women, children, people with HIV and AIDS, and the poor.
