Beatrix A. Hamburg (1923–2018) was an innovative psychiatrist and academic researcher who introduced new approaches to child and adolescent mental health and childhood diabetes. In a long and distinguished career, she focused on youth peer counselling, violence prevention, and public policies for the health of minorities. The first self-identified African American to attend Vassar College, Hamburg was also the first African American woman to graduate from the Yale School of Medicine. She was a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
