Susan Solomon
Susan Solomon (1956) is a leading atmospheric scientist who has contributed significant insights into the cause of the Antarctic ozone-layer “hole.” Her team’s observations indicated that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) interacting with ice crystals in clouds led to accelerated ozone depletion. Solomon has enhanced our understanding of connections between atmospheric chemistry and climate, including the link between global warming and human-induced carbon dioxide emissions, and the ozone hole’s influence on the Southern Hemisphere’s climate. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
